In january 1916 Major Edmund Street, arrived back from leave with this portable harmonium somehow blended in his kit. In the Holy Week of that year Tubby wrote that 2nd Lt. Godfrey Gardner "played divinely on the groanbox in the Upper Room". Gardner was organist of the Royal Philharmonic Society and a amazingly good musician.
Major Edmund Street and 2nd Lt. Gardner would meet their deaths on the Somme battlefields a couple of months later …
