In a garden shed Tubby had found a much-used carpenter's bench. From the first day this became the altar at wich Jesus, who was the son of a carpenter, was worshipped. For many hundreds of officers and 'other ranks' that rude bench was "the shrine of the whole Salient".
To prevent overzealous pilgrims from peeling off bits of the already much-battered bench to cherish thes as relics, it was put in a protective display cabinet.
