Albert French Collection
In 1975 a bundle of old letters were found at the bottom of a box of books at a second-hand furniture store.
These letters were penned by Albert French, a 16-year old Wolverton lad, and they relate his experiences after he enlisted in 1915 to fight in the Great War.
Here you can read the full transcripts of Albert's letters, and learn how his story has been shared with the community since their discovery.

Association for World War Archaeology
The province of Western Flanders in Belgium contains a particular kind of heritage and archaeological resources: the extensive remains of military activity on an unprecedented scale and intensity during World War I. Of the long portion of the famous Western Front (in which German and Allied forces faced each other in a statemate of trench warfare from 1914-1918), crossed Belgium from Nieuwpoort (Nieuport) to Mesen (Messines), the so-called Ypres Salient is one of the better known parts. Until recently, however, systematic archaeological excavations of World War remains has been highly localised. Now conditions have enabled to conduct more thorough surveys and undertake more extensive excavations. We would like to bring some of the most important results.

Australian War Memorial
C.E.W. Bean first began thinking about commemorating the sacrifice of Australians in war in 1915, at Gallipoli. The idea of a national museum took hold later, while Bean was visiting Pozières, France, where the Australian divisions suffered 23,000 casualties in less than seven weeks of fighting in 1916. Bean's idea was to set aside a place in Australia where families and friends could grieve for those buried in places far away and difficult to visit - a place that would also contribute to the understanding of war itself. Both commemoration and furthering our understanding of war inspire our work at the Memorial today.

.S. Auffanglager Breendonk - Symbol of Nazi Terror in Belgium
In 1940 the German army invaded Belgium and soon found itself confronted by the civil disobedience and resistance of people from all layers of population. The German response was to set up a vast repressive apparatus. The S.S. Sicherheit and Polizei, helped by informants and supported by the German army, hunted down elements hostile to the third Reich.

On a sunny spring afternoon, 22nd April 1915, the battlefields near the Belgian town of Ypres were engulfed by a frightening new development. The use of poisonous gas warfare on the Western Front had begun.
The story of the gas attack is told from both the German and Allied sides of the wire. With the aid of Map and Timeline windows, 3D maps and previously untranslated material this study offers fascinating details of the battle.
