The Passchendaele Museum in Zonnebeke will reopen in full glory from Saturday, 5 April 2025, following extensive renovations. The renewed Passchendaele Museum offers deeper insight into the history of the Battle of Passchendaele. With a revised storyline enriched by personal stories and authentic objects, the First World War truly comes to life within the castle.
Since its opening in 2004, the Passchendaele Museum has undergone impressive growth - from regional recognition in 2008 to the expansion in 2013, which introduced an underground experience route, reconstructed trenches, and an authentic American emergency house. In 2024, the first phase of the museum’s renewal was completed with the opening of the immersive experience Passchendaele 1917 and the Echoes of War room. This past winter, the second phase commenced, focusing on a thorough refurbishment of the castle’s exhibition halls.
A renewed museum
The updated Passchendaele Museum takes visitors through the war years step by step with a revised, more chronological storyline, enriched by an extensive presentation of collection pieces and personal objects. A renewed audio guide and lifelike scenes throughout the museum allow visitors to experience the story more intensely than ever before.
Additionally, the historical character of the castle is further enhanced: hidden architectural elements, such as fireplaces and windows, have been uncovered and restored to their former glory.
“We are placing greater emphasis on visitor experience,” says Joachim Jonckheere, chairman of the Passchendaele Museum. “The revised museum route ensures a smoother visitor flow, and the richly decorated interior enhances the castle’s atmosphere. The updated storyline, along with the adapted audio guide, immerses visitors in the story of the Battle of Passchendaele in a more chronological way.”
From 5 April, visitors can explore the fully renovated museum.
A family-friendly route
Younger visitors can embark on a journey of discovery with Lisa, her cousin Louis, and Maurice the museum rat. Lisa and Louis visit their grandfather, who collects World War I artefacts in the Zonnebeke castle. Guided by Maurice, they explore the museum with a fold-out map and interactive audio guide, completing various tasks along the way—from smelling the stench of gas to deciphering Morse code.
