On Friday, June 20th 2025, the Ypres’ Last Post Association travels to Halifax, Canada.  The delegation consists of director Patrick Donck and buglers Rik Vandekerckhove and Bavo Ketels. They travel to Canada for the unveiling of the restored Last Steps Memorial Arch in Halifax Harbor.

In August 2016, the Last Steps Memorial Arch was unveiled on a pier behind the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax. From this site, thousands of Canadian men and women took their last steps as they boarded ships to Europe during World War I. About 350,000 Canadian men and women boarded ships in Halifax to be taken abroad. About 60,000 of them never returned. The monument has now been restored and will be re-inaugurated on Sunday, June 22, 2025 as part of Halifax International Fleet Week - www.hfxfleetweek.ca.

Together with Flanders House in New York, a program was worked out in which the Last Post Association delegation will participate in various events as part of Halifax International Fleet Week. The buglers of the Last Post Association will sound the Last Post there on Sunday, June 22, at the unveiling of the restored monument.

Director Patrick Donck: "The Last Post Association is extremely pleased and honoured to participate in the unveiling of the restored Last Steps Memorial Arch in Halifax, Canada. Of the ± 60,000 Canadians killed during World War I, nearly a quarter died in Belgium, or over 15,000. More than 6,700 missing Canadian soldiers from World War I are listed on the Menin Gate in Ypres and for them our buglers sound the Last Post every evening. Our participation in the activities in Halifax once again highlights and strengthens this strong link between Ypres and Halifax and Canada and Belgium."
