Inauguration exhibition Nightwalker - Ieper - 05/07/2025
Please find below a number of pictures of the opening of the exhibition 'Nightwalker - Reniereé Depla' in the In Flanders Fields Museum on Saturday 5 July 2025.

During the First World War, the French village of Buire-au-Bois was located just behind the front line. In June 1917, the British poet and composer Ivor Gurney (1890-1937) was stationed there with his regiment. It was during these night-time strolls that he composed music and wrote poems.

Over a hundred years later, it seems almost as if by chance that Reniere&Depla now live, work and walk in the same village. They too regularly venture into the fields at night. It is there, in the rhythm of the night and in a place that has stood the test of time, that the soldier and the painters seem to intersect.

This encounter is depicted in the Nightwalker panorama. The installation is a visual interpretation of time and memory, drawing on research into Gurney's connection to Buire-au-Bois and the poignant images Reniere&Depla found in the museum's archives.

To coincide with the installation Nightwalker at the In Flanders Fields Museum, a publication of the same name has been released. This richly illustrated publication provides insight into the creative process of Reniere&Depla, the 2025 artists-in-residence, and contextualises their work within the landscape, history, and the life of war poet Ivor Gurney.

Welcome by Stephen Lodewyck, director of the In Flanders Fields Museum.

Reniere&Depla explained how they realised their work.
