New Zealand's 'The Blackest Day' remembered / herdacht (Frank Mahieu) - Passendale - 12/10/2023

This 2nd ceremony on October 12th 2023 took place at the New Zealand memorial at 's Graventafel (Passendale). Master of Ceremony was NZ Wing Commander Philippa Barratt. The ceremony was attended by the NZ Ambassader, H. E. H. E. Mrs Diana Reaich NZ Defence Attaché Rian McKinstry; and other Belgian, Australian and British military and/or civil representatives and people who are dedicated to remembering the fallen. The Reverend Stephen Murray conducted the service.
On that disastrous 12th of October 1917, 846 young New Zealanders were killed in the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium, with many more to die over the coming days from the wounds received on this one day. By the end of the day the total number of casualties, the wounded, the dead and the missing was 2,740. It took two and a half days to clear the battlefield of the dead and injured.

Deze 2e herdenking van 12 oktober 2023 vond plaats aan het Nieuw Zeeland gedenkteken aan 's Graventafel, Passendale.
Ceremonieleider was Wing Commander Philippa Barratt, NZDF. De plechigheid werd bijgewoond door de Nieuw Zeelandse Ambassadeur H. E. Mrs Diana Reaich en de NZ Militaire Attaché Col. Rian McKinstry, de burgemeester van Zonnebeke Ingrid Vandepitte en schepen Joachim Jonckheere en door Belgische, Australische en Britse brugerlijke en miliaire vertegenwoordigers en door mensen die herdenkingen trouw zijn. Dominee Stephen Murray leidde de dienst. Op die desastreuze 12e oktober 1917 werden 846 jonge Nieuw Zeelanders gedood innthe slag om Passendale en nog meer overleden de dagen erop door hun verwondingen. Tegennhet einde van de dag liep het aantal slachtoffers op tot 2740 (deden, gewonden, vermisten). Het duurde twee en een halve dag om de dodoen en gewonden van het slagveld te halen.
