Tank Memorial Ypres Salient herdenkt / remembers (Frank Mahieu) - Poelkapelle - 04/05/2024
04/05/2024 - Poelkapelle
The friends of the Tank Memorial Ypres Salient, Poelkappelle commemorated the participation of the Tank Corps during the German Spring offensive in Flanders – ‘Operation Georgette’ in which members of the Tank Corps acted as dismounted Lewis machine gun teams in support of the infantry. The actual date of the commemoration was 29th April which saw the German assault finally brought to a halt by British and French forces at the Battle of the Scherpenberg, but the ceremony this year was done on Saturday May 4th. at the
Tank Memorial Ypres Salient
.
Subsequently a commemoration was done at
The Ploegsteert Memorial
for the tank crew members who have no known grave.
i.e. two officers and 17 men of the Tank Corps who were honoured in this ceremony, predominantly of 5th Battalion who were in action dismounted in the Meteren (F) area in April 1918. It is of our opinion that this is the first time the Tank Corps soldiers here have been given a dedicated commemoration. The wreaths for the Royal Tank Regiment and the Friends of the Tank Memorial Ypres Salient were laid by Lady Auriol Bowden and Mr Graham Young who travelled from the UK to be with us on this day. Master of ceremony was Hon. Lt. Col. Rene Declercq.

(Tank Memorial Ypres Salient).
Aansluitend werd bij het
Ploegsteert Memorial
Ceremoniemeester was Ere-Lt. Kolonel René Declercq.
