Funeral/begrafenis L. Sgt. Robert Brand (Frank Mahieu) - Mesen - 25/10/2023

October 25th 2023 at Messines Ridge British Cemetery, a funeral service took place for 2 unknown soldiers and for Lance Sergeant ROBERT BRAND who all served with the 9th (Glasgow Highland) Bn. The Highland Light Infantry. L. Sgt Brand who was killed in action, aged 21, on 13 April 1918 during the Batlle of the Lys (aka the 4th Battle of Ypres). Since March 21st the Germans had launched their Spring Offensive, first at then Somme region then further North in order to capture Ypres and forcing the British to, the channel ports and out of the war. The German Spring offensive though failed and caused an estimated 80,000 casualties on both sides. L. Sgt. Robert Brand and his two unknown comrades who were laid to rest today all lost their lives then too. Now no longer lost, finally resting properly, remembered for ever more.

The service was attended by relatives of L.Sgt Brand and they wanted to express how proud they are of him and his selfless fight for freedom and that of his soldiers and their descendants. A delegation of The Royal Regiment of Scotland, 2nd Bn (Royal Highland Fusiliers), attended the ceremony and performed the full military protocol at this funeral service. The service was conducted by Revd. David Jeal, Chaplain to the 2nd Bn The Royal Regiment of Scotland.
Group captain John Dickson, British Defence Attaché to Belgium, represented the British Embassy.

A number of Belgian and British officials, civil and military attended as did a group of British schoolchildren and people who are loyal to the remembrance of the fallen. The ceremony was organised by the MOD & JCCC. The new grave and headstone was made by the CWGC who will care for it in perpetuity

Op 25 oktober 2023 vond op Messines Ridge British Cemetery een begrafenisdienst plaats voor 2 onbekende soldaten en voor Lance Sergeant ROBERT BRAND die allen dienden bij de 9th (Glasgow Highland) Bn. The Highland Light Infantry. L.Sgt Brand die sneuvelde, 21 jaar oud, op 13 april 1918 tijdens de Leieslag (alias de 4de Slag om Ieper). Sinds 21 maart waren de Duitsers hun Lenteoffensief begonnen, eerst aan de Somme en vervolgens verder naar het noorden om Ieper te veroveren en de Britten te dwingen naar de kanaalhavens en uit de oorlog te halen. Het Duitse Lenteoffensief mislukte echter en veroorzaakte naar schatting 80.000 slachtoffers aan beide zijden. L.Sgt. Robert Brand en zijn twee onbekende kameraden die vandaag te ruste werden gelegd, verloren ook toen allemaal hun leven. Nu niet meer verloren, eindelijk goed rustend, voor altijd herinnerd.

De dienst werd bijgewoond door familieleden van L.Sgt Brand en zij wilden uitdrukken hoe trots ze zijn op hem en zijn onbaatzuchtige strijd voor vrijheid en die van zijn soldaten en hun nakomelingen.
Een delegatie van The Royal Regiment of Scotland, 2nd Bn,(Royal Highland Fusiliers), woonde de ceremonie bij en voerde het volledige militaire protocol uit tijdens deze begrafenisdienst. De dienst werd geleid door ds. David Jeal, kapelaan van het 2nd Bn The Royal Regiment of Scotland.
Groepskapitein John Dickson, Brits defensieattaché in België, vertegenwoordigde de Britse ambassade.
Een aantal Belgische en Britse functionarissen, burgerlijk en militair, waren aanwezig, evenals een groep Britse schoolkinderen en mensen die loyaal zijn aan de herdenking van de gevallenen. De ceremonie werd georganiseerd door de MOD& JCCC. Zoals altijd zorgde de CWGC voor het nieuwe graf en de grafsteen en zij zullen er ook blijvend zorg voor dragen.
