Today's 1st Rededication Service, organised by the MOD War Detectives, was at New Irish Farm Cemetery for Capt. Hugh Mortimer Travers DSO of the 5th. Bn. The Royal Munster Fusiliers. This rededication was made possible through the research and dedication of Michiel Vanmarcke. Capt. Travers was born in 1873 in Calcutta from a military family. His father was a Lieutenant Colonel, one grandfather had the rank of General and the other the rank of Major General. In 1893 he joined the Royal Munster Fusiliers as 2nd. Lieutenant. With this rank he was commissioned and joined the Leicester Regt. in South Africa. In 1899 he became Lieutenant and served during the Boer War. In 1902 he was promoted Captain. For a short period in 1907 he had to retire for medical reasons. Still in 1907 he (re)joined the Royal Munster Fusiliers. When war broke out in 1914 he was attached to the Duke of Wellington Regt. Capt. Travers led a bayonet charge retaking trenches west of Gheluvelt on 8 Nov. 1914. In that action he was killed but received posthumously the Distinguished Service Order for his outstanding bravery.

His remains, though nameless, were reburied after the war at New Irish Farm Cemetery, the headstone telling us he was 'an unknown captain of The Royal Munster Fusiliers'. Now he finally has a known grave which was rededicated in the presence of his grand nephew and his family, a very special and moving event for them. Representatives of Irish & British Embassy were present, as were military of the the Royal Irish Regiment, and also representatives of Belgian Military, the RBL, the CWGC and The Somme Association. The service was conducted by Revd. Isaac Thompson, Chaplain to the Royal Irish Regiment. Faugh a Ballagh ! (now still the motto of the R.I.Regt, meaning "clear the way". Long time ago already motto of the Royal Irish Fusiliers). The new headstone was as usual provided by the CWGC who will take care of it for ever. Lest We Forget.

NL tekst : De eerste ‘Rededication’ ceremonie van vandaag, georganiseerd door de MOD War Detectives, vond plaats op New Irish Farm Cemetery voor Capt. Hugh Mortimer Travers DSO van het 5th. Bn. The Royal Munster Fusiliers. Deze herinwijding werd mogelijk door het opzoekingswerk en de toewijding van Michiel Vanmarcke. Capt. Travers werd geboren in1873 in Calcutta en stamde uit een militaire familie. Zijn vader was een Luitenant Kolonel, een van zijn grootvaders had de graad van Generaal, de ander was Generaal Majoor. In 1893 vervoegde hij de Royal Munster Fusiliers als onderluitenant. Met die rang werd hij aangesteld bij het Leicester Regt. in Zuid-Afrika. In 1899 werd hij luitenant en diende tijdens de Boerenoorlog (Boer War). In 1902 hij gepromoveerd tot kapitein. Gedurende een korte periode in 1907 moest hij zich terugtrekken om medische redenen. Nog in dat jaar 1907 vervoegde hij opnieuw de Royal Munster Fusiliers. Toen de oorlog uitbrak in 1914 werd hij bij het Duke of Wellington Regt. gevoegd. Op 8 november 1914 leidde Capt. Travers een bajonetaanval om de loopgraven ten westen van Geluveld te heroveren. Hierbij werd hij jammer genoeg gedood. Posthuum werd hem de Distinguished Service Order toegekend voor zijn uitzonderlijke moed.

Zijn stoffelijke resten werden, zij het naamloos, gevonden en herbegraven op New Irish Farm Cemetery. De grafsteen vermeldde  dat het om een onbekende kapitein van de Royal Munster Fusiliers ging (an unknown captain of The Royal Munster Fusiliers). Nu rust hij eindelijk in een gekend graf dat werd heringewijd in het bijzijn van zijn achterneef en diens familie. Het was een heel speciale en ontroerende plechtigheid voor hen. Vertegenwoordigers van de Ierse en Britse Ambassade waren aanwezig, ook militairen van het Royal Irish Regiment, en ook vertegenwoordigers van het Belgische leger, het RBL, de CWGC en The Somme Association. De plechtigheid werd voorgegaan door Revd. Isaac Thompson, aalmoezenier bij het Royal Irish Regiment. "Faugh a Ballagh !" (nu nog steeds het motto van het regiment, betekenend "clear the way". Nog langer geleden was het al het motto van de Royal Irish Fusiliers). De nieuwe grafzerk werd door de CWGC voorzien die er nu voor altijd zal voor zorgen.
