- Poelkapelle
On Wednesday evening 19th August 2015, a dedicated ceremony took place at the TMYS at Poelkapelle followed by inclusion within the 8pm Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial.
The Tank Corps & Union flags were raised whilst the attending Standards of the TMYS & Royal British Legion Scotland Passchendaele Branch were dipped. The official action report recovered from the Tank Corps Journal and gallantry award citations recovered from the Tank Corps Book of Honour were recited.
Wreaths were then placed on behalf of Honorary President Lt General (Retd) David Leakey CMG CBE, the Friends Board members and membership.
This ceremony was to commemorate the successful Cockcroft & Maison du Hibou actions which took place near Ypres on August 19th 1917.
The above was recognised by the Tank Corps & the RTR today as a collective action which due to it's complete & stunning success so brilliantly executed during a period of immense difficulty, prevented the Tank Corps from being either disbanded, broken up or removed from the battlefield.
Another ceremony as per the same above format will take place at 6pm & 8pm on Saturday August 22nd 2015 to commemorate the famous FRAY BENTOS tank action at Gallipoli farm where this composite crew would be awarded: 2 x Military Crosses, 2 x Distinguished Conduct Medals and 4 x Military Medals ensuring they would become the most decorated British tank crew in history, awarded during a single action.
