Info
Essex Farm Cemetery and the bunkers right next to it, where John McCrae wrote his famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, are among the best-known sites in the entire Ypres Salient. The memorial to the 49th (West Riding) Division on the adjacent canal embankment is now visited far less frequently. The fact that the entire canal embankment was one of the impressive ‘retranchements’ designed by the French military architect Vauban, and was used in the same way again during the First World War, is hardly known at all (anymore). At Essex Farm, the city of Ypres, as the owner, has permanently opened a 450-metre stretch of the canal embankment to the public. Thanks to a new landscaping scheme, the cemetery and the Advanced Dressing Station are now connected to the canal embankment and the canal itself.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Fields.

In Flanders Fields
