The first floor exhibits the monumental painting ‘Het Gulden Doek van Vlaanderen’ (Flander’s Golden Canvas). It took Hendrik Luyten some decades to finish this painting that shows nearly all important persons in Flanders history. The painting was donated to the IJzer Pilgrimage Committee by professor Paul Daels and an anonymous donor. After the war it stayed hidden for a long time. Only when the IJzer Tower was finished, it could be brought to the museum. In the course of 1998, the painting was restored on the spot.
