1,723 Belgian and 81 Italian soldiers are buried on the military cemetery of Houthulst. The cemetery was constructed in 1923 and has a surface of 5 ha 24 a. Most of the Belgian soldiers who are buried at Houthulst fell during the final offensive that started on 28 September 1918.
The Italians were prisoners of war in the German army. The were forced to transport ammunition for the German army. Many of them were killed by the fire or their allied soldiers. They are buried at the back of the cemetery near the forest.
